While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant things from the area, and wipe up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
