I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the water to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you’re unable to locate the tap to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

While you wait, begin wiping up any water, put a bucket to catch drips, and remove valuable items from the area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
