I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you promptly to fix the leak.

While waiting for our emergency plumber, remove any significant things, clean up any water, and position a container to catch any drips. You also should turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
